Using a SWOT Template

Business Plan Pro

Here are some recommended SWOT template examples. Understand your business's Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats by doing a SWOT analysis. A SWOT analysis is the best way to really focus your marketing strategies in ways that will drive optimal business growth and profits.

In doing a SWOT analysis, you first determine your main strategic objective (eg, doubling revenue over the next three years) and then you list your organization's Strengths and Weaknesses, and the market Opportunities and Threats:

  • Strengths (what are the positive attributes of your company, product or service?)
  • Weaknesses (what are the negative attributes of your company, product or service?)
  • Opportunities (where are the market opportunities for your product or service?)
  • Threats (what are the main threats to your company?)

There are a number of SWOT examples available, both simple free ones, as well as for-fee more functional examples. Using a template can help make the process faster and easier, and can also make sure that you complete the analysis in a thorough and objective way.

Here are some recommended SWOT analysis templates that we have used and evaluated:

Free Marketing SWOT Template from Go-to-Market Strategies

You can find a useful free template for SWOT analysis at Go-to-Market Strategies here. Just scroll down under "Sales and Marketing templates" and you'll see the SWOT example as a free download. It includes some excellent directions about how to use SWOT to improve your marketing, some key questions to help fill in the template, and a formatted table to fill in your Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats, as well as listing out your market strategies to benefit from them.

Marketingenious Free SWOT Model

Marketingenious also offers a thorough free SWOT analysis template here. They have the interesting approach of first going through and listing Strengths, Weaknesses and Threats, and then only after that going through each of those items and coming up with Opportunities that lead from them. Their template example also includes a final step of developing your statement of Competitive Advantage as a result of the SWOT analysis, as well as advertising taglines and logo.

Powerpoint Templates

If you need a template with a little more pizzazz, then consider this SWOT analysis template powerpoint by StratPro, or this powerpoint template by Smile Templates. You can use either one of these to produce a very professional-looking SWOT analysis presentation.

SWOT Business Planning Tools and Templates

Many business planning packages also include tools and templates for performing a SWOT analysis. Choosing a business planning package is by far the most thorough way of working through the SWOT. Even though it is somewhat more expensive, it is much cheaper than making costly business mistakes due to ineffective marketing strategies!

My favorite business planning package is Business Plan Pro from Palo Alto Software. It includes a thorough section to help you complete and professionally write up your SWOT analysis.

Business Plan Pro

Business Plan Pro is the best selling, most recommended business planning software available. Whether your business is large or small, established or start-up, this software has everything you need to produce a professional and customizable business plan that gets results. With over 500 sample plans, plus instructions and examples at every step, you never need to worry about writer's block. Business Plan Pro easily exports to Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe PDF and includes a built-in Plan Review to ensure bullet-proof financials. Two expert business books are also included to help build your financial success. Learn more about Business Plan Pro.
